You can be confident in your calling, gifted in ministry, and even successful in what you do. But there’s another question we need to ask.
Do you have the character to remain faithful when things become difficult?
It’s one thing to stand before a crowd and preach a powerful message. It’s another thing to continue serving when no one seems to notice, when people reject you, or when the results don’t come as quickly as you expected.
During our leadership conference in Kenya, I spent considerable time teaching about godly character. One of the things I wanted the pastors and leaders to understand was that character is not simply a matter of becoming a better person through greater self-discipline.
If you want to know how to develop biblical character, the answer is not simply to try harder.
Godly character begins somewhere much deeper.
It begins with knowing God and allowing the Holy Spirit to form His character within us.
If you desire to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ, I invite you to join the Burning Truth Africa Family. Through biblical teaching, prayer, and encouragement, we want to help you develop an intimate relationship with Jesus and learn to walk in the Spirit.
Character Is More Than Personality
When we think about character, we often think about behavior.
We might describe someone as dependable, honest, disciplined, or confident. Those are important qualities. But godly character is not the same thing as having an impressive personality or being naturally good at leading people.
A person can be an excellent speaker and still struggle with integrity. Someone can appear confident in public while being governed by fear in private.
That’s why we need to understand the difference between natural ability and spiritual transformation.
God isn’t simply trying to make us more impressive people. He wants the life and nature of Christ to be expressed through us.
In 1 John 4:8, the Bible tells us that God is love.
That means if we’re going to understand His character, we must begin with who He is.
God isn’t loving only when things go His way. Love is His nature. God IS love.
And as we develop our relationship with Him, that same love should become increasingly evident in how we treat others.
True Transformation Begins on the Inside
Romans 12:1–2 teaches us to present our bodies as living sacrifices and to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
Notice that Paul doesn’t simply tell us to improve our outward behavior.
He speaks about transformation.
When you are born again, something happens on the inside of you. You receive new life in Christ. But learning to live according to that new life is a process.
Your thoughts must be renewed. Your habits must change. Your responses to people and circumstances must begin to reflect the nature of Christ.
We cannot produce that transformation through human effort alone.
That’s where the ministry of the Holy Spirit becomes so important.
He teaches us. He corrects us. He reveals areas of our lives that need to change. And as we yield to Him, His character becomes more evident in us.
Learning to recognize His leadership is part of that relationship. If you’d like to explore this further, read my teaching on How to Hear God’s Voice: Learning to Recognize When God Is Speaking.
This doesn’t mean we have no responsibility. We must respond to what the Holy Spirit is teaching us.
But there’s a tremendous difference between trying to construct godly character through self-effort and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us from within.
Confidence Gives You a Voice. Character Gives That Voice Weight.
One of the important relationships we discussed in Kenya was the relationship between confidence and character.
Confidence matters.
You need confidence to step into the calling God has given you. You need confidence to preach the Word, pray for someone, or take a step of faith.
But confidence without godly character can become dangerous.
You may be confident that God has called you to a particular place. But do you have the character to remain there when the work becomes difficult?
You may be confident in the gift God has given you. But will you use that gift to serve others, or to draw attention to yourself?
You may speak boldly about the love of God. But will you continue to demonstrate that love when someone treats you unfairly?
These are the moments when character becomes visible.
The real measure of our character is not simply what we say about Christ, but how faithfully we reflect Him in the situations we face.
How to Develop Biblical Character Through the Holy Spirit
I want to encourage you to begin with your relationship with God.
First, spend time in His Word. Don’t simply read to collect information. Read with a desire to know the One who is revealing Himself through Scripture.
Second, develop fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Give Him room to show you areas where your thinking and behavior need to change.
Third, be willing to receive correction. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will reveal something about our attitude or actions that we don’t want to confront. Those moments can become opportunities for genuine growth.
Finally, practice walking in what you’re learning. When you have an opportunity to forgive, forgive. When you have an opportunity to act with integrity, do what’s right. When circumstances become difficult, remain faithful to what God has entrusted to you.
We don’t do these things to earn God’s acceptance. We do them because we belong to Him and want His nature to be expressed through our lives.
Watch the Teaching: Godly Character and the Holy Spirit
I taught about these principles during our 2026 Leadership Conference in Migori, Kenya. In this teaching, I explain why godly character must be formed by the Holy Spirit rather than through self-effort alone.

Let Christ Be Seen in You
My desire is not simply to see believers who can preach powerful messages or operate in spiritual gifts.
I want to see believers whose lives reveal Jesus Christ.
People who love as He loves.
People who remain faithful when circumstances change.
People whose confidence is rooted in God rather than their own abilities.
And people who allow the Holy Spirit to continue transforming them throughout their lives.
That’s the kind of character that will have a lasting impact.
At Burning Truth Africa, our mission is simple: to help believers develop an intimate relationship with Christ.
Understanding how to develop biblical character begins with that relationship. The more we know Him and yield to His Spirit, the more His nature can be revealed through our lives.
